Danger in the Playground
By Douglas Hawkins, Year 6

Good afternoon children and visitors. My speech is about the dangers in our playground. I have recognised the following as dangerous to us children in our school: slipping up

  1. The tower
  2. The trampoline
  3. The Volley board
  4. The bark covering.
towers 1. The Tower: Before we had a lower tower, there were no accidents, because children were careful. Just because someone in the government made a law to lower our tower doesn't mean it is safe. I think it should be put back to the height it was before.

2. The Tramp: What about it? Before it was put in the ground no one got hurt, but as soon as it was put level with the ground, we had an accident. It is not safe because children are not as careful. They jump off and on the tramp and sometimes jump off seats onto the tramp. We are supposed to only have two people on at once, but it is easier to cheat with it like it is now. I think it should be put back above ground to make it safe.

3. The Volley Board: The volley board is dangerous because people can climb up the back of it and sometimes they jump off onto the crash mat and sometimes miss. This is dangerous. Children know the back of the volley board is out of bound, but that doesn't stop it being dangerous.

4. The Bark Covering: The bark that covers our playground is dangerous because it hurts you if you fall on it. Before the bark was there people didn't get hurt. Now you can graze your knee on the bark. It would be better to have just grass.

I have to ask these questions:

  1. Why did the tower get lowered?
  2. Why did the tramp have to be put in the ground?
  3. Why did the volley board get put out of bounds?
  4. Why bark and not grass?
We would have a much safer play ground if these matters were attended to.
